Putnam County is nearing completion of a significant stormwater infrastructure project on St. Johns Avenue in Palatka, with a $10.5 million investment aimed at reducing flooding. This initiative, which began in 2019 and saw construction start in 2022, is designed to address long-standing flooding issues and improve drainage in the area.
The project involved excavating parts of St. Johns Avenue to install an upgraded drainage system, including new pipes beneath the roadway. Nearby swales were also cleared and connected to enhance the stormwater capacity, improving the system’s efficiency. A large retention area was also constructed to manage overflow during heavy rainfall, offering a cost-effective solution to ensure the system performs effectively.
James Stout, Director of Putnam County Public Works, commented, “This project reflects Putnam County’s commitment to proactive infrastructure improvements that directly benefit our community.” With completion approaching, the county expects a noticeable reduction in flooding during storms, providing long-term relief for residents and businesses along St. Johns Avenue.
This project is part of Putnam County’s broader efforts to modernize infrastructure and build resiliency against extreme weather events, creating a more sustainable future for the community.
