Overseeing Public Works, Fleet Maintenance, Building & Grounds, and Utilities, ensuring the County’s infrastructure, vehicles, and facilities are well-maintained, safe, and operating optimally. This includes maintaining roads, public transportation, utility systems, and ensuring the proper care of County buildings and grounds.
The Public Works Department is comprised of four Divisions; Administration, Engineering, Road and Bridge Maintenance, and Water and Wastewater Utilities.
The Department develops the plans and specifications related to numerous engineering projects, oversees and co-ordinates the activities of various design firms and contractors performing work for the County, provides permit inspections for driveways and site development in conformance with County standards. The Department also evaluates and develops solutions for numerous drainage issues, researches and resolves right-of-way issues, monitors and implements numerous grant programs, and provides other engineering and surveying services as required.
The Department is also responsible for maintaining a significant portion of the County’s dirt and paved roads, providing and maintaining signage, traffic signals, mowing right-of-ways, repairing potholes, developing road resurfacing recommendations and monitoring the resurfacing program, grading and maintenance of dirt roads, and performing small construction projects as required. In addition, the Department co-ordinates the activities of various Municipal Service Benefit Units (MSBU’s), operates and maintains several water and wastewater treatment plants, including their service and distribution piping systems, oversees the operation of the County Barge Port, and performs administrative functions such as: receiving customer calls; preparing routing, and tracking correspondence; scheduling; preparing work requests; maintaining work orders and Department work records; and preparing, executing, and monitoring the Department’s budget.
